A Melodious Thunk!
"Thelonious Monk ... a melodious thunk ... Charlie Mingus ... such nimble fingers ...
droppin' the bass all over the place". Part of the lyrics from 'A Jazz Thing' by Gang Starr.
29th September 2008 A Melodious Thunk came into being, not an auspicious start if truth be told, we had more DJs than punters on that first night, but Jim from Louth did his best to make the dancefloor look busy.
The night then took up residence at the Red Bar in Wakefield, home of the Wakefield City Soul Club and the Clan McPahil, brother Martin taking one of the resident DJ spots. The bar is ideal; newly refurbished/extended and fitted with a new sound system, it's just off the city centre circuit but still attracts plenty through the door.
The Jazz night is now likely to change somewhat, the music policy has been widened to include
both new & old choons that you're probably not gonna hear in the 'Modern Rooms'
......
so it's gonna be a jazzy, funky, housey, rare groovey, quirky sort of night!
I personally will be sticking with the jazz side of things, whether it be from the raft of Blue Note classics and jazz-funk anthems through to brand new Schema outings, all the stuff pouring in from Scandinavia & Germany, the left-field choons from Fat City or Juno or all the latest outpourings from Japan.
I'm also looking to attract a wider audience, so it'll be advertised on the Brownswood & Southport forums as well as EMS, for now it's still gonna be called 'A Melodiuos Thunk' but that may change.
I'll also add links to other like-minded sites, such as the excellent fro-disia blog hosted by teecee a really informative site with links to Tony's excellent fro-disia mixes.
Speaking of blogs ... check-out the excellent Colin Curtis Connection hosted by the man himself.
Because Jim doesn't have a website or widely advertise 'Out to Lunch', I'll do that on here ......
Out to Lunch is the best kept secret in the Midlands, it's a jazz-dance session that runs on the second Sunday of every month at the Snug Lounge on Houndsgate in Nottingham city centre.
The flyer says it's ..... Heavy Jazz, Hard Latin, 100mph Afro-Cuban music for dancers, eavesdroppers & non-conformists. "The best jazz dancers in the country" Perry & Rocky et al there most months. Check-out Perry's site .... www.jazzcotech.com
Out to Lunch
Back to business ... I'll use the jukebox on the home page to give a flava of what to expect and I'll try and change that playlist every couple of weeks, probably getting guest DJs to submit playlists.
So ..... watch this space!

This compilation hopefully gives you an idea of the diversity of jazz played.
It's one of hundreds that I've done for my own enjoyment and it will probably be the next
jukebox playlist.
No they're not for sale, none of the CDs on this site are.
